• Holy Smokes For All Intents

January 31st 2020, That is when Burlington/London Based band Holy Smokes released their new EP "For All Intents".  This is Holy Smokes Second EP. Their first was a self titled EP released in 2017.  Known for their 70's Rock riffs mixed with a punk edge, this new EP still contains that and a whole lot more.

The Band took a hiatus as founding member Jacob Dunning moved to the Kincardain are to further his horticultural carreer.  After a little over a year of soaking up the northern experince he moved back to the golden horseshoe and with original bass player Sam Old, rekindled the band.

Holy Smokes Left to right: Matt Hare, Nelson Alexander, Jake Dunning, Sam Old

During the hiatus there where many trips to London to Jam with Sam which is where Jake met Sam's roommate Nelson Alexander. Nelson a graduate of the music program at Fanshawe College began recording some previous unreleased Tunes Jake and Sam had been working on.  The trio agreed to reboot the band and booked thier first show. Small problem was they didn't have a drummer.  Jake reached out to longtime friend Matt Hare to see if he would sit it for the gig. Matt and Jake met through the Open Mic Night at Dickens Pub in Burlington Ontario years before and had jammed many times in the past.  After the gig Matt joined the band permenantly.

The Band has played a handful of shows in Hamilton and Toronto and are looking forward to what 2020 has in store,

Their next show is February 22nd at The Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto in support of The Anti-Queens (Stomp Records) along with The Organ Thieves () and Doghouse Rose.  You can get tix here:

  • Open Mic Night

Welcome to Open Mic Night We hold an Open Mic Night every Tuesday Night at Dickens Pub in Burlington Ontario.  Open Mic Night is an inclusive non judgmental family of musicians and music supporters. We are creating a community to nurture artists development. All talent is welcome!

We occasionally will have guest hosts through out the year and travailing musicians drop in for an acoustic set.  Past Guests have included Luke Bentham of the Dirty Nil, Adam Michael Currently with Walk off the Earth. Travaling through town we have had Mobina Galore and more recently Chad Price, (legendary frontman for ALL, Drag the River and most recently A Vulture Wake), along with New Jersey, singer/songwriter SAMMY KAY when they stopped in on their North American tour and dropped a couple of sets.
We have been recording the evenings throughout the years and you can listen live here on Reverbnation.
You can also become a part of this magical family simply by stopping in on a Tuesday.

“The main thing with the open mic is to build a community of singers and songwriters,” said Coles. “It’s hard to get up (on stage), especially for younger musicians, it can be absolutely terrifying. The main thing is to be a support group and it’s turned out to be a great success. I’ve met a lot of people over the years and watched many people grow.”   -Chuck Coles

  • Holy Smokes!

Holy Smokes is a band that surfaced at this years Burly Calling, taking to the stage right after Say Yes on the Wednesday Night at Joe Dogs Bar and Grill.  This band hails from..... well I guess Southwestern Ontario. Jake Dunning of Burlington currently in St. Catherines for School along with Sam Old of Oakville also in St. Catherines for School and Alex Hamnett of Burlington, currently in London for school brought some high energy and very solid Original Tunes to the stage. Rocknroll with a melodic punk edge to it.  They started the set stringing a couple of originals tunes together that many of those in the front row seemed to know or caught on very quickly to the lyrics. They followed that up with a cover of Local Punk Band "The Penske File" tune "Home" which continued to keep the crowd on their side. Three more originals including a blusey seventies rock style tune called Holly Jane and the set was over way too quickly, leaving many in the crowd saying "Holy Smokes, where did these guys come from?" If you get the chance be sure to catch them live. Rumor has it that there is an ep currently being recorded.  Upcoming shows include London Jan 21st at The RIchmond Tavern  Burlington Jan 27th at the Boston Manor. Hard to tell with these guys as they seem to be a little socially awkward when it comes to sharing news on social media. :)  You can watch part of their Burly perfomance here

  • Naked by Jake Dunning

New release from Jake Dunning of Burlington Ontario.

Naked is a collection of songs written by Jake over the past couple of years.  Jake Dunning is involved with many bands including Don't Tell My Mother, How's Your Banter and Holy Smokes.  After a summer on the patio with his parents they asked for a recording of his work to listen to while he was off at school in the fall.  It was so good it was decided that it should be shared.
